‘canteen goes healthy’ a persuasive informative piece written by Head Girl, Lucy Grey from her school assembly at Sea View College strongly expresses Grey’s opinion that healthy food is the better alternative for school canteens over the usual “greasy” and “cheap junk”. In this piece Grey talks to her fellow students about the recent change in the school cafeteria and tries to get them to view the positive aspects of their canteen going healthy. Junk food is not a healthy option for school lunches is Grey’s contention. Grey adapts persistent and disgusted tone and apts for her audience to feel the same way and agree with her. The writer claims that the unhealthy junk food that was previously served at the Sea View College Canteen may be the cause of students’ pale and pimply skin and may also be the reason that the have trouble concentrating, she also thinks that the fatty foods currently served lead to sluggish brain activity and negative effects on the students’ health. Lucy Grey applauds The School Council and as Head Girl continually expresses the importance of a healthy canteen and how it will be of benefit to all students. The Author uses emotive and descriptive language frequently. Words such as “greasy” and “cheap junk” paint a picture in the audiences mind and puts a negative connotation with the junk food being served at the school canteen and positions the reader to feel negatively about their choices. Grey also uses alliteration with words such as “pale pimply skin” “Maths is Monotonous” and “Biology is boring” the use of alliteration emphasises Grey’s points. Statistics such as “1.5million people under the age of 18 are considered overweight or obese” enforce what Grey is already saying with hard evidence that really makes the audience think about the message Grey is trying to get across; the fatty foods are bad and that they are a problem
