Mrs. Legendary Candace Nicole Parker was born April 19, 1986 in St. Louis, Missouri. She is the youngest of Larry and Sara Parker’s three children. She was born into a family of basketball players, which eventually lead to her becoming one at the age of two. Her life went straight uphill from there. Candace attended Naperville Central High School on Naperville, Illinois. There she helped lead her basketball team to back-to-back state championships in 2003 and 2004. She was chosen twice as the Naismith and Gatorade Prep Player of the Year. She was also the first woman to win a slam dunk contest. In this contest, she outscored several future NBA stars such as J.R. Smith and Rudy Gay. After graduating high school, Candace received an athletic scholarship to continuing playing basketball at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. Without any hesitation, she made her mark on the WNBA by recording the best rookie debut in league history in a victory against the Phoenix Mercury. During her rookie season, she became the second player to dunk in a WNBA game and the first player to dunk in multiple games. At the end of her rookie year, she led the WNBA in rebounds and double-doubles. She earned both the 2008 WNBA Most Valuable Player award and the league’s Rookie of the Year award. Candace is the only player in the WNBA’s history to receive the MVP as a rookie. At the beginning of her second season Candace gave birth to her first child, Lailaa Nicole Williams, in May of 2009. Despite missing eight games due to her giving birth, she still managed to lead the league in double-doubles and rebounds.
