Canary Islands The Canary Islands are an archipelago and an autonomous region of Spain in the Atlantic Ocean off the north-western coast of Africa. The island is composed of two provinces: Las Palmas and Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The archipelago consists in seven islands: Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, La Palma, Hierro and La Gomera. There are volcanoes on the islands, including Teide on Tenerife (3700 m) which is the highest point in Spain. Climate: The Islands have been known as the “Islands of eternal spring”. * Mild winters and warm summers: 17°C - 24 °C * Most daylight hours in Europe with a total of 4,800 daylight hours a year. Tourist Destinations * Tindaya mountain: it´s one of the most important cave art manifestations in Fuerteventura Island. We can find nearly 300 carved in stones. * Maspalomas dunes. It was declared a National Protected site of Interest. It covers an area of 2,400 hectares. * Lobos island. The Island was named for the large number of sea wolves, also called called monk seals, that once lived there. It has been declared a special protection area (SPA) for birds. * Corralejo Dunes. These dunes are situated in the north of Fuerteventura and it was recognized as a protected park. It is a pure desert, isolated and warm which is inusual in the Spaniard landscape. It´s an area with hardly any vegetation. Corralejo is surrounded by sand dunes and miles of sandy beaches. * Green Cave. It is one of Lanzarotes`s most fascinating landmarks and considered as one of the longest volcanic galleries of the world. National Parks * Caldera de Taburiente (La Palma). It was declared National Park in 1954. This park has a wide cauldron-shaped valley, surrounded by high peaks with a natural drain. Most attractive feature is its rugged landscape.
