Canada’s Rise to Independence What is Independence? Independence is not being influenced or controlled by others, thinking and or acting for oneself. Which countries deserve independence? The ones that have done as much as they can to stick out as a dominant nation do. These countries that stick out prove themselves to be their own people. Many countries have their independence through a variety of ways: winning wars, dominance in wars, major world events such as peace keeping. Canada was one of these countries. Canada became known for its peace keeping missions that ended many affairs. During the cold war, Canada lost a bit of its reputation for being an independent nation. Canada aligned itself with the US while trying to stay true to Canadian goals and values. This was not easy. Canada struggled to keep US influences from weakening its national identity. Canada developed its independence when they decided to create a flag for Canada. Pearson believed that Canadians should sever their British connections and that Canada needed an identity that would be meaningful to all Canadians. The last step toward making Canada a completely independent nation was to sign the new Constitution Act, giving Canada the ability to make changes to the Constitution. Canada’s independence was strongly affected ever since the beginning of World War 1, all the way until the post Second World War. Through the First World War Canada became well known and its independence grew quite a lot by supporting battles, getting a seat in the Paris Peace Conference signing the Treaty of Versailles and joining the League of Nations. During the inter-war era Canada made itself well known for severing its connection with Britain by not automatically doing what it says for Canada to do. In the Second World War, Canada brought the case of joining the war to parliament instead of just joining because Britain did. Canada proved itself to be a force that doesn’t need someone to tell them what to do by helping other countries and winning battles by themselves. Post Second World War changed Canada. By now Canada’s reputation is substantial and is known for helping the world when it is in dire need of help. Canada also asserted its independence by creating a flag for itself symbolizing that it deserves to be its own independent nation. Without Canada participating in all of these World Affairs, Canada might not have had the chance to prove themselves worthy of being an independent nation.
