Can the use of technology help improve literacy in our youth? April 1, 2013 Can the Use of Technology Help Improve Literacy in Our Youth? Literacy today, are we improving or getting worse when it comes to our youth learning literacy skills? According to the National Center for Education Statistics that conducted a study every two years that asks the question how are American students performing in reading? For 2011 the finding for the average reading score for fourth grade stayed the same as the 2009 study, but improved six points from the 1998 study. The average reading score for the eighth grade was one point higher than in 2009 and had a two point’s improvement from 1998. While some think social media and technology has had a negative effect on literacy skills, others have found that technology has helped with literacy skills by using iPads for improving literacy learning, and text messaging, tweeting and social media for spelling, writing and reading skills. While children can learn to read and write without the use of technology, these days some children are getting an advantage by using iPads in the classroom to help improve literacy skills and test scores. Many classrooms around the U.S. are implementing iPads into their classrooms and using them in many different learning avenues. iPads were first introduced in early 2010 and have become a favorite educational tool across the world. Elementary school, middle schools, high schools and colleges have been known to use the mobile devices as additional learning tools. Even thought iPads are a great educational tool like everything else they have their advantages and disadvantages.
