Can P.E. Shape the Future? There is a medicine out there, available to everyone---this medicine lowers the risk of cardiovascular disease, sleeping problems, lung problems, diabetes---even cancer. There is a medicine out there that improves your mood, self-esteem, and academic report. It is not a pill, a shot, or anything you can find at a pharmacy. This medicine is simple---exercise. Now, some might defend the absence of P.E. as a class, yet they don’t register that exercise improves overall fitness and self-confidence, reduces stress, and give kids personal experience with setting goals. What’s not to like about P.E.? Well, it’s hard to believe, but many parents will argue that it is too competitive and intimidating for kids, only growing the list of things that a bully can use to tease another child. To be honest, yes. There are those kinds of people who only wish to tease and taunt others. But things like this can be prevented. P.E. is one of the flexible classes, with a huge variety of sports to have units on. You can replace wrestling with badminton. Looking at who has quick reactions, and not who’s the strongest. Change tackle football, to flag football who’s the biggest, to who can run the fastest. These are just a couple examples. Schools can also think of putting in sports that most kids have never even played before, that are still active and fun. For example: cricket, handball, volleyball nukem, smashball, etc. So there are a few kids that just aren’t as mature as the others, does that mean we stop Physical Education as a class? Even when there are many ways to prevent the type of bullying P.E. causes? In the big picture, I think we can all agree that the results of not having P.E. as class can only be worse than having it there. Especially since teens are constantly affected by their self-image.
