Can IT give competitive advantage to the small business? If yes why or why not? Yes, IT can give competitive advantage to any types of businesses. Since we live in the "information age," information technology has become a part of our everyday lives. IT refers to anything related to computing technology, such as networking, hardware, software, the Internet, or the people that work with these technologies. Many companies now have IT departments for managing the computers, networks, and other technical areas of their businesses. But even the small business can use IT to manage their technical areas and make it large. Let’s take a small departmental store outside my house “Vijay stores”. It’s a small departmental store which sells all the useful household items. Despite the size of the store, the customers visit the store more frequently. Most of them are their daily customers. There are 4 to 5 workers kept to inspect any theft and to guide the customers. The one and only technology used in the store is the “cc camera” which is kept in front of the cash desk. Which is inspected by no one. Now, by use of IT we can definitely make the store better and more customer friendly. If the cc cameras were used and was monitored by someone behind the scenes the 5 workers or employees those who were kept to inspect any theft would have been reduced to one or two. This will reduce the salary expenses of the stores. Instead of calculating the total cost of the customers with the calculator, bar code stickers and readers can be used to calculate the total expenses with a swap of the item. This will save the time of the customers and reduce the queue and make it look more managed. Other information can be obtained by the regular customers such as most bought items, items on demand etc can be used to change the structure of the store to make it easy for the regular customers.
