Academics and Athletics. These two words are almost always associated with each other by students of our generation. Back in the day, kids were able to juggle school work and sports without conflict, so why are modern day kids resorting to choosing only one of them? Well, there are those who believe that academics must always come first and that playing a sport would interfere. Then, there are those who believe that athletics can open the doors to playing in the high leagues. However, they do not know that athletics can actually enhance academics and improve the well-being of students. Several studies have proven that playing sports and physical activity in general can help students get better grades by increasing concentration, motivation, efficiency, and overall mental health. Many studies have been conducted to prove that athletics can have a positive impact on academics. Howell Wechsler, director of the Division of Adolescent and School Health for the Centers for Disease Control, conducted about 50 studies on the subject. He discovered that half of the students showed positive signs and none of them demonstrated any negative impact. Even 2-20 minutes of physical activity can intensify a student’s concentration in class since mental sharpness increases when blood flows. This, in turn, allows kids to pay more attention in class, understand the material taught to them, and get better grades compared to students who do not engage in physical activity on a daily basis. In addition to improved concentration, sports can increase motivation and improve efficiency. In order to stay in an athletic program, students must maintain their grades. Therefore, they go to class each day and do their homework on a regular basis. And because of their demanding schedules and work, they also learn how to manage time wisely.
