Compare and Contrast Essay When I first time take a look on these two sculptures- Calf-Bearer and The Good Shepherd, I figured out there are some obvious differs that separate them, although they still look similar. The time periods, animals, materials, work’s style and the surface’s texture are the subjects that appearance of these two sculptures. I would select this group of artwork to write this essay because I was wonder the animals have any meaning of the work during that time period or not; one of the young man is carried bull and another is carried the lamb. However, I can tell the work, Calf-Bearer is built earlier than The Good Shepherd. The Calf-Bearer is a Greek Sculpture, and it was built between 575 and 550 BCE. It is from the Archaic Period (600-480 BC) which is before the Classic Revolution. It was found in Athens in 1864 and it probably a work of Phaidimos. Its size is 1.64 meter tall. The material of this sculpture is marble. The name of this young man is Rhombos. He carried a bull calf across his shoulders in order to sacrifice it to Athena Pallas. He looks like forcing the animal to stay put, and had a body sculpted with the clear lines of muscles with strong facial qualities. It is now in the Acropolis Museum in Athens, Greece. I would say this piece is older than The Good Shepherd because there have some missing parts, which are his hands, parts of his legs, chin, and also an ear of calf. And the technique of this work looks similar than The Good Shepherd. Originally the statue had a Kouros stance but the parts of legs are missing. The body conforms to the Kouros ideal of physical perfection. The body of this sculpture is characterized by a strong, compact from which is appeared rather than obscured, by the thin cloak.
