The "K" in Kola was replaced with a "C" for marketing purposes. John never realized the potential of the drink he had created. He slowly sold portions of his business to various partners. Founder Caleb Bradham, a pharmacist from North Carolina started the Pepsi-Cola brand in the late 1890s. Chaleo then co-founded a company in 1984 with an Austrian partner who helped turn Red Bull into a global brand. Red Bull took many marketing and ingredient ideas from an energy drink in Thailand called Krating Daeng. Dietrich Mateschitz, an Austrian entrepreneur, developed the Red Bull Energy Drink brand. Mateschitz was the international marketing director for Blendax, a toothpaste company, when he visited Thailand in 1982 and discovered that Krating Daeng helped to cure his jet lag. Between 1984 and 1987, Mateschitz worked with TCBG Pharmaceutical (a Blendax licensee) to adapt Krating Daeng for the European market.
Two brothers, Richard and Maurice McDonald founded McDonald’s in 1937. The brothers developed food processing and assembly line techniques at a tiny drive-in restaurant east of Pasadena, California. In 1954, Ray Kroc, a milk-shake mixer salesman, saw an opportunity in this market and negotiated a franchise deal giving him exclusive rights to franchise McDonald’s in the USA. Mr Kroc offered a McDonald’s franchise for $950 at a time when other franchising companies sold restaurant and ice-cream franchises for up to $50,000. Mr Kroc also took a service fee of 1.9 per cent of sales for himself plus a royalty of 0.5 per cent of sales went to the McDonald brothers.
The corporation started out as a small drive-through in 1948 by brothers, Dick and Mac McDonald. Raymond Albert Kroc, a salesman, saw a great opportunity in this market and advised Dick and Mac to expand their operation and open new restaurants. Mr. Kroc bought out the McDonald brothers in 1961. By 1967 McDonalds expanded its operations to countries outside the U.S.A. This unyielding expansion led the Corporation to open 23,000 McDonald's restaurants in 110 countries in 1994, producing $3.4 billion in annual revenues.
Vernon Rudolph, who is the founder of Krispy Kreme Doughtnuts started the doughnut business in 1937 after he had possessed the company’s special doughnut recipe from French. Later on the company focused making and selling doughnuts wholesale to supermarket. There were about 29 shops of Krispy Kreme in 12 states during the late 1950s and most of them were operated by franchisees. Joseph McAleer was the first Krispy Kreme franchisee. Beatrice Foods had taken over the company after Rudolph’s death in 1973.
