Who would have thought that the pesky pond scum at the top of a pool could be the changing factor in the world’s history? Research is being done on algae to make it the front runner for the best renewable energy source to replace crude oil. An alga is a form that has been discovered to have a vast quantity of oil that can be converted to useable oil to make gasoline. The world is going through a period of global warming that will affect future generations, and as members of the society, a change is needed that will help preserve what is left of the worlds natural resources. Professor Yildiz has only been at Cal Poly for only two years now, but has helped push Cal Poly to a front runner for the quest to find biodiesel fuel. Through his research, Cal Poly became the first in the country to “establish a rigid-tube, closed-system photo bioreactor for growing algae…” which is “…one of the most promising forms of renewable biofuel” (McNally). Although not relative to a nation as a whole, but more so to those associated with Cal Poly, Professor Yildiz is showing thousands of people in the San Luis Obispo community that algae based biodiesel fuel is the way of the future. It is very interesting, because as stated earlier, photo bioreactors are the leading prospect to grow algae, and Professor Yildiz, a Cal Poly teacher is the inventor of this great piece of equipment. Since his arrival to Cal Poly, the U.S. department of Agriculture has been awarded grants to help fund the project. Not only has Professor Yildiz helped the world change towards biodiesel fuel, he has also helped his students get jobs and be admitted to grad school because of their research for change
