Core Unit 1 - Understanding and promoting the development of pre-school children. E1. Observation 1 28th February 2013 3.50pm – 4.05pm The child (B1) is standing, on his tip toes, on one side of the table tennis table. He picks up the bat with his right hand and holds it. He holds the ball on the table steady with his left hand. He swings the bat, takes his left hand away and hits the ball; it hits the net and rolls back to him. He swings the bat to hit the ball whilst it’s still moving. He hits it and then it hits the net and bounces off the table behind him. His head turns with the ball and puts the bat on the table. He finds the ball on the floor and he runs, on his tip toes, to it and then crouches down and picks it up with both hands. He returns to the table puts the ball in his left hand and picks up the bat with his right hand. He then walks, on his tip toes, to the opposite side of the table. He places the ball on the table and holds it steady. He swings the bat and misses the ball. He holds the ball steady again with his left hand. He swings the bat and hits the ball; it hits the net and rolls back to him. Adult 1 is walking past him. He picks up the ball with his left hand and holds it out towards Adult 1. Adult 1 “So you want me to play with you?” The child nods. Adult 1 is distracted by other children. B1 then puts the ball on the table and walks away still holding the bat. He walks around the room, on his tip toes, and looks around. He crouches down and puts the bat on the floor. He walks around looking at the other children. He then returns to the table tennis table and picks up the other bat with his right hand. Adult 1 comes to the table. Adult 1 “Where’s the other bat?” B1 doesn’t respond. Adult 1 picks up the ball from the table. B1 walks to the other side of the table. Adult 1 “Ready?” B1 smiles. Adult 1 throws the ball towards
