Spurgeon Born in Kelvedon, Essex on June 19, 1834 Charles Haddon Spurgeon was the first of seventeen children. Though Spurgeon came from a long line of ministry, with both his father and grandfather serving as ministers, none could predict that Spurgeon would one day be regarded as one of the most influential Baptist ministers of all times. Nicknamed the “prince of preachers”, Spurgeon used his gifts to touch the hearts and minds of thousands. Who was this man and what made him? There are three key factors that make Spurgeon different from the other ministers of his time: his humble spirit, his dedication to the gospel of Jesus Christ and his revolutionary ability What can wash away my sin? He spent his early years living with his grandparents in Stambourne, Essex were his grandfather was a Congregational minister. James Spurgeon was the local minister in the Stambourne area for fifty four years. He was said to have the gift for preaching and a dry sense of humor; both traits which Charles later inherited. Growing up in such a household allowed him to gain unique conscious that far exceeded his years, a consciousness which would add to his ability to minister to the people of all walks of life.
