Business Shadow Project This shadow project was conducted on July 11, 2008. I chose to shadow a manager at the AirTran Holdings Corp. He holds a title of Senior Operations Manager at the Orlando, FL headquarters. I brought with me a rough list of questions that I would use to prompt him into more detail. On the day I shadowed him, it was already summer here, and thus the chances of storms was heavy. This always made any airline nervous, especially due to the lightning strikes to the region. Orlando is one of the leaders in lightning strikes in the nation, and thus pilots have to be very careful especially during this season. Company data: Company name: AirTran Airways is a subsidiary of AirTran Holdings and has the motto “sets the standard to be the best in everything they do, everyday.” AirTran Holdings also owns Galena Corp, plus other business. History: The company merged with ValuJet in July of 1997, and moved its headquarters in November of that year to Orlando FL. It went public in August 2002, and is one of the most successful airlines in the U.S. currently. Major Products and Services: AirTran is an airline, dedicated to providing excellent travel throughout the United States. It flies to 58 destinations with over 700 daily flights. It has a hub at Atlanta, Ga. It has about 8,900 employees, who work as crewmembers. It was one of the first companies to easy online booking and checking in, with advance seating assignments. This led to a great cut down in costs, making for cheaper flights. It also came up with innovative ways to market, such as putting XM radio in every seat, and having the fleet with the youngest jets made it very popular with the public.
