Business Etiquette in Hong Kong Hong Kong is a very unique place in Asia. It is a place that is neither a country nor a city. Hong Kong is governed under the principle of “one country, two systems”. China has agreed to give Hong Kong a high degree of autonomy. They have an agreement where Hong Kong can preserve its economic and social systems for 50 years from the date of the agreement. Hong Kong is a place that is known for its many businesses. It is located on China’s south coast by the South China Sea and the Pearl River Delta. This city-state is known to be one of the world’s leading international financial centre’s. It is also known for its port, which is where most of China’s exports go through, making it one of the world’s busiest. Hong Kong also has a major capitalist service economy characterized by low taxation and free trade. The Hong Kong Dollar is currently the ninth most traded currency in the world. Since Hong Kong is a part of China, the language spoken there mostly consists of Cantonese dialect and English. The reason English is one of the official languages is because; it used to belong to the British Empire. The ethnic groups in Hong Kong consist of 95% Chinese and 5% other groups. The religions of that area will include 90% eclectic mixture of local religions and 10% Christian and Hong Kong also has a population of a little over 7 million people. Appearance in a place like Hong Kong is a very important thing. Like China and Japan it is a very stylish region and people pay great attention to clothing. For business meetings, people of Hong Kong should dress conservatively. Men should wear conservative and lightweight western suits, while women should wear conservative dresses suits, or skirts and blouses. Since fashion is a big deal in Hong Kong, wearing a nice watch or a nice piece of jewelry would be good because it would get noticed
