1. What makes a good role model and how would I ensure that I acted as a role model for employees I supervise? I think the term “role model” gets used to much in todays society without anyone actually stopping to think what it the term actually means. A true role model is someone who sets an example worth following without trying; they are natural leaders with strong morals and integrity. A good role model is someone who understands that others look up to them and make a concentrated effort to ensure they are setting a good example for others to follow. In my current workplace I have experienced a large number of managers who set a very poor example to follow, a large number of them subscribed to the method of thinking that one should: “Do as I say, Not as I do.” This is a poor example of leadership in my eyes, those is a role of responsibility need to be accountable if they want employees to follow there directions they need to show them the way, not simply make demands. When I am responsible for leading a group of employees I would make a an effort to perform all my required tasks in a way that I would want others to perform them. What are the traits of an effective leader? Do I have these traits? How would I develop these traits? Often people are placed in a leading role due to their seniority in the workplace without any thought going into whether they actually possess the traits required of a leader. I have experienced this often in my current workplace, a number of the people who are in leading roles are only in these positions because they have worked with the company for many years, or in some cases they have been given the roles because they are friends or family of those who are in charge. This can lead to a very poor work environment where people are often left without proper direction and tasks go unfinished or work is completed in a poor
