Communication in a Business Context Christopher Ruediger GBA 321 Saint Leo University Communication in a Business Context In the year 2013 with more methods of communication than is practically imaginable why does it appear that communication is one of the most challenging obstacles for modern business. The office of advocacy for the U.S. Small Business Administration reports that “from 2007 to 2010, employer establishment births dropped 12 percent from 844,000 to 742,000 (Source: BLS, BED)” and they continue to drop. Marketing vs. Communications One of the most important aspects of marketing is putting appropriate time and focus into the business strategy. Many businesses today focus too much effort into one aspect of marketing without comprehension of the others, or their relationship to each other. Ensuring the business has a successful marketing strategy balancing all its components offers the highest chance of overcoming today’s bleak odds for new businesses. “Many small businesses lump advertising, promotions, public relations and other communications tools together and erroneously call them marketing. Communications serve a marketing strategy, which is more planning than execution. Understanding the difference between marketing and communications will help you create effective sales strategies and tactics that boost the bottom line. (Samuels, 2013)” Marketing and communication are a collaborative effort to ensure a strong foundation for any business. Understanding the difference between marketing and communication and their correlation to the overall goal is critical. Each by itself serves a purpose but only through the synergy of the two will they achieve the larger business plan such as the relationship between fuel and a car.
