Rewrapping the Big Mac 1. Describe the factors that prompted McDonald’s decision. Why do you think it reversed its longstanding policy so quickly? To what extent was the company motivated by genuine concern for the environment and to what extent for self-interest? The main factor that promoted McDonald’s decision to switch from polystyrene foam packaging to paper was the fact that younger children would feel that their products were damaging society. Since the company’s customers are mainly children and younger people, it makes sense that McDonald’s would want to make their customers happy and not ruin their business by being viewed as damaging the environment. Not only did this switch improve the image for the company, it also saved money which probably helped prompt the switch quickly. In my opinion, the company was motivated more by self-interest than genuine concern for the environment because when it came to McDonald’s recycling the reaction was not the same and there were not changed made as quickly as with the wrapping. I do believe that it is important for the company to keep a good image for their customers who also contributed to the switch since younger generation and today’s society is concerned about the environment. 2. Do you agree with the decision? Was it an environmentally sound one? Should the issue have been studied further? What do you make of the fact that McDonald’s continues to use polystyrene foam boxes overseas? I do agree with the decision to switch the wrapping from polystyrene foam to paper because it enables the company to please their customers, be environmentally friendly, and save money on wrapping supplies.
