George W. Bush was born July 6, 1946 in New Haven, Connecticut. He was one of the six kids of George H. W. Bush and Barbara Bush. His grandfather was a U.S Senator in Connecticut. From 1961 to 1964 he attended Phillips Academy in Andover, Mass., the boarding school from which his father had graduated. He received a bachelor's degree in history from Yale University, and was the president of his fraternity. Like his father, he was also a member of Yale's secretive skull and Bones society. He became a certified pilot in June 1970. In the fall of 1973, he started Harvard Business School. He received his MBA in 1975 and went back to Midland, there he started his own oil and gas firm. In 1977, he married Barbara Welch, a teacher and librarian. In 1978 he ran for Congress and failed. Later on, he sold his firm and went to Washington, D.C., working as an adviser and speechwriter in his father's presidential campaign. In 1994, he went against Ann Richards for the Texas governor position. He won the election with 53% of the vote and became the first child of a U.S. president to be elected state governor. He was reelected in 1998 with nearly 70 percent of the vote, Bush became the first Texas governor to win consecutive four-year terms. In 1999 he formally announced his candidacy for the Republican party presidential nomination. He won the Republican nomination, taking a strong lead in public opinion polls over Vice Pres. Al Gore, the Democratic Party nominee; Ralph Nader, the Green Party candidate; and political journalist Patrick Buchanan, the nominee of the Reform Party. His running mate was , Dick Cheney staff for Pres. Gerald Ford and secretary of defense during the presidency of Bush's father.
