The initial impact was devastating which left about 300,000 people homeless out of a population of about 410,000. Many of the people were evacuated to nearby cities, and the others lived in makeshift tents on the beach of North beach. In fact years later in 1908 these refugee camps were still in operation. The overall cost of the damages was estimated at the time to be 400 million US Dollars (around 8.2 Billion present Dollars). The fires that were a direct result from the main shock and the aftershocks were just as damaging because of the uncontrollable burning from ruptured gas lines.
Memo Date: June 4, 2010 To: Vern Fenkel, Manager of Department of Natural Resources No.4 From: Sol Weidman, Supervisor and Area Manager of Environmental Engineering Subject: Requesting a permit from the Department of Natural Services The Farnsworth Paper Works Incorporation has worked hard to maintain clean and pollution free areas around the paper mills that allot this land. We are proud of our reputation in following all regulations and passing all pollution control requirements without a problem with the DNR, however our organization faces an unwarranted issue. Our organization accrues a considerable amount of fly ash every year and we are requesting that a permit be issued permitting the discarding of our fly ash into our 40 acre Landfill. The purpose of this proposal is to request this permit for the disposal of our fly ash into our unprepared Landfill. This permit will allow Farnsworth to operate at an optimal pace and with a better demeanor since one step in the gradual process of eliminating our residual fly ash will have already been accomplished.

Human health is at great risk due to the untreated waste that is dumped in Lake Huron each year. The untreated sewage contains many viruses, two being Giardia (an intestinal parasite), cryptosporidium, which causes intestinal illnesses and even death. E. coli a more familiar virus has elevated its concentrations in Lake Huron, found in either animal or human feces, which causes diarrhea, nausea, and stomach cramps. ("Testing the waters,"

Veterans came and set up camp in DC and planned to stay until they were given money to feed their families. The national guard was brought in to displace the demonstrators, our WWI veterans. He helped save the nation’s economy by first declaring a “bank holiday” in which he closed banks for one day to stop people from withdrawing their money from the banks.
