Bullying and the Affects on Adolescents Robin L. Outlaw University of Phoenix Abstract This paper explores the issue of bullying and how it affects adolescents. How school counselors can identify bullying and know the dangers.There are three types of bullying we will address. The three main types of bullying are verbal, physical and relational. This paper will discuss how each style of bullying affects self-esteem . This paper will also look at how gender and sexual orientation influence bullying. We will also discuss the social and family interactions and how they are affected by bullying. By reading this paper you should be able to identify types of bullying and how it affects adolescents. Bullying and the Affects on Adolescents Bullying and the Affects on Adolescents Bullying is a major issue facing schools today. In the past schools usually looked the other way and let teens work it out. That is no longer an option in today's world. School counselors should understand the issue of bullying and the dangers associated with it. They should know the three types of bullying and how it affects adolescents. There are three types of bullying that teenagers face today. The first is physical, verbal and relational. We will discuss how each of these affect adolescence and their self-esteem. We will also look at how gender, sexual orientation and family relationships all influence or are affected by bullying. According to Olweus (1993) bullying must have three elements to be considered as bullying. It must be intended to do harm, be repetitive and cause a power struggle between two or more people. Bullying has three components to categorize it as bullying. The first component is physical bullying. Physical bullying is defined as hitting, kicking or any violence toward another student.
