Bullying is a fact of modern society, however, knowing the psychological effects bullying can cause, and that suicide is often a result of it, we need to take preventative measures to reduce bullying. One way to do so is by learning the signs of someone who is being bullied and the signs of someone that is the bully. It is imperative that society realizes what bullying does to individuals. Bullying is the use of aggressive behavior of one child towards another. This behavior does not just happen in the physical presence with the way technology is changing. Parents now have to worry about social networking sites and their child being bullied in the safety of their own home. Bullying is the aggressive behavior of one child to another that is not wanted and is a repeated behavior (U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, unknown date). In order for a behavior to be considered bullying it needs to include an imbalance of power and be repetitive (U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, unknown date). These kids that bully others use a sort of power that they have over others whether it be their strength, embarrassing information or their own popularity. Bullies use these “powers” to control and harm other kids that are seen as being less than they are. There are certain actions that are taken into consideration to see if the behavior qualifies as bullying. If a child is spreading rumors, making threats, or being physically or verbally abusive towards another (U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, unknown date). Bullying doesn’t only happen during school hours, it also happens after hours. It is however more common for bullying to happen on playgrounds, on the bus and in the school building (U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, unknown date).
