Bulimia Nervosa Disorder is characterized as the combination of both binge eating and inappropriate compensatory behaviors occurring on average once a week for at least three months. A binge episode is defined as a person consuming an abnormally large amount of food, over a discrete period of time, than most people would consume in similar conditions. To prevent weight gain, the compensatory behaviors may include misuse of medications as well as maladaptive behaviors such as: purging and frequent dieting. Reasons for Diagnosis Criteria A1. Recurrent episodes of binge eating. Andrea reports multiple episodes of binge eating since her college years. In her college years, Andrea details her episodes of eating large quantities of food, such as: several eggs and bread, in her dorm room over the course of a few hours. Criteria A2. The sense of lack of control during each binge eating episode. Andrea initially reported she felt in control of her eating habits as she believed she would stop once she does eating; however, this may have been a lack of acceptance of her eating habits. When completing an assessment for Andrea, it should heavily consider biological, family and cultural considerations to justify her diagnosis as well as her treatment plan and goals. Andrea’s relationships amongst peers, friends and her ex-husband may have become triggers for her maladaptive behaviors such as her binge eating. Andrea reported being bullied and frequent arguments with her mother about her excessive eating. During her adolescence, Andrea does not report binge eating but does express she would “nibble throughout the day”; her lack of feeling accepted by her peers and mother may have help developed her cognitive distortions and become a future antecedent to her binging episodes. This consideration would help breakdown the emotional significance behind her marriage and divorce as another trigger to her eating
