An Analysis of the Themes that Illustrate the Unsuccessful Parent-Child Relationship in “Write me Sometime” When relationships fail or they are on the path to failure, people attempt to restore them through old habits. This can happen in any type of relationship, but there seems to be more effort when the unsuccessful relationship is between a parent and their child. There is never one specific reason for this failure, but there are usually a variety of problems that build up over time. In Taien Ng-Chan’s short story “Write Me Sometime”, a girl is having trouble connecting with her father. As an adult, she is reminiscing about her childhood lunch dates with her father, which she enjoyed.
Many clients could start to feel down on themselves and use that food for comfort; however, there are those who have the reverse effect and when they are depressed they choose not to eat food at all. A lot of people with eating disorders have negative self-images or have some form of mental illness that causes them to think negative thoughts about their body. Mediators are great for things like group counseling because they allow women to discuss their triggers and reasons for their eating disorders and the mediator can use other people’s experiences to help assist in redirecting client’s way of thinking and also help prevent any tension that could be created during the discussion. Mediators can help clients see

The disorder (bulimia) is characterized by recurrent episodes of binge eating, occurring three times in the last three months which include: eating in a period of time an amount of food which is larger than what most people would eat in the same amount of time. Another symptom is the loss of control over eating, for example the feeling that one cannot control how or what one is eating. “The problem is that things can get really serious when something you think is totally under your control, turns into an obsession (WomensHealth).” Laxatives and diuretics are used as medication

“Dieting often fails because people are trying to go against their biological drive to eat.” Discuss explanations for the success and failure of dieting. Dieting is extremely common and research has shown that up to 70% of women diet at some stage in their lives. Some diets are successful, whereas some are not and there are many explanations for this. One explanation for why dieting is successful is that those with low self-esteem and are dissatisfied with their body are more likely to stick to their diet and lose weight. Ogdens’ 2000 study supports this view; he investigated differences in psychological factors between weight loss regainers and weight loss maintainers.
EBT Review: Family Therapy for Adolescents with Anorexia Nervosa Wilmington University Overview of Problem Area Anorexia Nervosa Anorexia Nervosa (AN) is an eating disorder that causes people to obsess about their weight and the food they eat. People with anorexia nervosa attempt to maintain a weight that's far below normal for their age and height. To prevent weight gain or to continue losing weight, people with anorexia nervosa may starve themselves or exercise excessively ("Anorexia nervosa," 2012). Because this disorder is difficult to treat, a variety of treatment options are available, but family therapy is a component of each. The prevalence of AN in 15-19 year old girls has been reported to be about five in 1,000 (fisher et al., 1995), but it is less prevalent in younger children.
This fear of gaining weight might come from being picked on for maybe being a little heavier than the other kids or if the child's parents have an obsession with staying thin and have very restrictive eating patterns, this could definitely affect the way a child sees themselves whether they are given healthy amounts of food to eat or not. Seeing their parent react to food is going to make them react in the same way - parents who have anorexia nervosa are likely to have children that develop anorexia nervosa. Like Beth, a friend of my family was very restricted with what they were allowed to eat - even down to a padlock on their refrigerator. Beth became anorexic but this lady went the other way and wants to feed everyone, including herself, around her because she does not want anyone to go hungry. Beth might have been pressured by her parents or peer to be thin and that is why she developed this disease.
She is unaware of the damage she is doing to her health by her binge eating and secretly eating unhealthy foods. She starts lying about her identity and her health to feel fit in. According to "Support4change" (2011), “adolescence is a stage at which we are neither a child nor an adult, life is definitely getting more complex as we attempt to find our own identity, struggle with social interactions, and grapple with moral issues” (Adolescence: 12 to 18 Years). Jenna’s poor eating habits, lack of exercise, and lack of knowledge of good health, puts her at high risk for developing diabetes. Diabetes Overview and Typical Presenting Signs In the United States, the population is nearly at 26 million people diagnosed as diabetics, and if a cure is not found, it is projected that by 2050 one out of three people will have diabetes.
This behaviour can become a core value and can require work to alter. Miss E parents may have established this behaviour in her unwittingly. Although it is also possible (judging from Miss E statement that her parents “badgered her” about food that her parents also exerted some form of control over her and her eating habits as a child , for their own reasons. Perhaps the motivations for this can be explored later with Miss E's consent? Any feelings of insecurity attached to the benefits of weight loss must be addressed also for example - Miss E's fear of changes in her own life.
