When studying a vocational health and social care course it is usually required that you carry out work placements. There are so many settings that you could work in like: in a nursery, day centre, primary school, secondary school, hospital, care home, residential home, homeless shelter, and clinics. You will come into contact with many professionals and so need to act professional too, and you will also see many service users like: injured people, mentally ill people, terminally ill people, people dealing with a bereavement, young children, pregnant women, and so many more. It is vital that you follow what the staff tell you and to respect others. Before starting work placement anywhere you need to make sure that you have a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check completed and have shown it to a member of staff at your placement setting. This needs to happen in order to meet the Minimum Care Standards regulation. The Minimum Care Standard Regulation is a set of guidelines that are minimum expectations and should be carried out by all health and social care services in England and Wales. There are 38 standards and when The Commission for Social Care Inspections (CSCI) come and inspect each service setting, they will be assessed on each standard and their findings will be written in a report. Having a DBS helps prevents harm from being caused to any vulnerable person due to it showing your criminal record and not allowing anyone potentially dangerous to work within any health and social care environment. Having a DBS also works alongside the Protection of Vulnerable Adults and the Children Act, which aims to protect any person from harm and make sure that they are in a safe environment.
