Breast Cancer Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer found among women in the United States. The reason why I decided to write about breast cancer is because I know 3 people that have the disease. Two of them are moms of friends of mine and the other is a personal friend who is only 24 years old. The American Cancer Society estimates in 2009, approximately 192,370 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. Of those, they estimate that 40,170 will die from the disease. Only lung cancer causes more cancer deaths among women. Data from January 2006 has identified approximately 2.5 million have had a bout with breast cancer. Many of them are now cancer free. Others still have cancer and are undergoing treatments. Breast cancer rates differ by ethnicities. For example, breast cancer death rates are higher in African Americans compared to white women. Since 1990, death rates from breast cancer have dropped approximately 2% a year. There is still much work to be done. In this paper I will define the disease. I will discuss the systems of breast cancer; the different stages of this disease, the types of treatments available to women, and the type of healthy living that may help prevent ever getting breast cancer. Breast cancer is a malignant tumor that can develop within different areas of the breast. Certain cells in the breast become abnormal. This can sometimes be harmful. The cells can divide quickly, making many copies of themselves and then form a tumor. The breast is composed of two important types of tissues. The two main tissues are glandular tissues and stromal (supporting) tissue. The Glandular tissue has the milk –producing glands (lobules) and the ducts (the milk passage) when the stromal tissues has fatty and fibrous connective tissues of the breast. The breast is also made up of lymphatic tissue-immune system tissue
