Breaking Barriers Through English “English is necessary.” That is what my English teachers always use to say. I never saw the need to study neither grammar nor literature, except of course for my grade’s sake, until now. Although English is not the widely use language, many people still use it. Koreans, Japanese and Chinese are just one of the Asian countries studying the language. In fact they flock here in the Philippines to learn English faster and cheaper. It only proves that English is important, just like what they say. Our world is the home of many diverse cultures. We have different nationalities, different beliefs, and different languages. These differences result, most often than not, to the barriers keeping people of the world separated. When people are separated, understanding becomes hard. Problems concerning every single person in the world, regardless of his race or language, become different to solve. Global warming, war and terrorism are just some to name a few. How can we inform everyone that the earth is getting warm because of our anti-nature activities? How can we tell countries to stop the war which causes death and destruction? How can we tell them to spread love instead of terror and hate? Are interpreters enough to translate every word uttered in a different language? The only solution is, we have to find a common ground. That common ground is English. If this language is studied properly, used effectively and conscientiously, there would no longer be misunderstanding between and among the nations.
