BRAZIL Part 1: Specific information about Brazil Brazil, officially the Federative Republic of Brazil, is located in Eastern South America and bordering the Atlantic Ocean. Brazil shares common boundaries with every South American country expect Chile and Ecuador. It is the world's fifth largest country with a total area of 8,514,876.599 km2. Brasília is the capital of Brazil. * Population The population of Brazil, as recorded by the CIA (Central Intelligence Agency) in July 2013, was approximately 201 millions inhabitants, and 23.6 inhabitants per square kilometres. The population growth rate is actually 0.83%. 87% of the total population is defined as urban. The population is heavily concentrated in the South-eastern and North-eastern regions. * Main Language spoken & literacy rates The official and most widely spoken language of Brazil is Portuguese. It is virtually the only language used in newspapers, radio, television, and for business and administrative purposes. Less common languages are also spoken throughout the nation; include Spanish (border areas and schools), German, Italian, Japanese, English and a large number of minor Amerindian languages. Concerning the literacy rates, according to the CIA, in 2013, 90.4% of the population age 15 and over can read and write. It means that 9.6% of the total population are still illiterate in the country. * Ethnic and/ or religious affiliation The percentage of Roman Catholics in Brazil is very high (73.6%), being the country with most Catholics in the world. Other religions include Protestantism (15.4%) and Spiritualism (1.3%). Brazil’s society is composed by a variety of people with different origins. However, according to the CIA today’s society is made up of: white 53.7%, mulatto 38.5%, black 6.2% and others (including Japanese, Arab, Amerindian) 0.9%. * Climate Brazil is
