Brave New World by Aldous Huxley In Brave New World, Aldous Huxley predicted where society was heading; the similarities are that both societies abuse drugs, have similar intakes on life and death, and have no problem with having multiple sexual partners. Drug abuse is a common factor in both societies. The people in Brave New World use soma all the time whether they need it or not. Soma is an ideal pleasure drug. “Soma was served with the coffee. Lenina took two half-gramme tablets and Henry three.” (Huxley 150}”…The loving cup of strawberry ice-cream soma was passed from hand to hand…”(Huxley 82) People in our world, especially adolescents, Opioids(Oxycontin) with a prescription are just a few legal drugs. Some commonly abused illegal drugs would include PCP, heroin, marijuana, crystal meth, cocaine. The drugs in both societies can give you false realities. “Swallowing half an hour before closing time, the second dose of soma had raised a quite impenetrable wall between the actual universe and their minds.” (Huxley 70-80) “She swallowed six half-gramme tablets of soma, lay down on her bed, and within ten minutes had embarked for lunar eternity. It would be at least 18 hours before she was in time again. “(Huxley 131) In our society, drugs such as 2CB, DMT, mushrooms, 4MTA, heroin, and many more can give you hallucinations. The drugs in both societies are available daily. “there is always soma, delicious soma, half a gramme for a half-holiday, a gramme for a weekend, and two grammes for a trip to the gorgeous East, three for a dark eternity to the moon…(Huxley 37) The people of the World State are given an amount of soma daily to keep them happy ,because when they are happy, they won’t rebel against the government.
