173 Reflective Journal. Week 1: Aims of the criminal Justice system This week was essentially an introductory topic and provided me with a basic understanding of the aims and operations of the criminal justice system. I learned that there is a number of different steps within the criminal justice system and the involvement of all the parties involved such as police, judge and jury and the defence. According to John Champion the main purpose of the criminal justice system is to process and prosecute individuals who commit crimes against society and to deal out suitable punishments for these individuals. This is a pivotal part in terms of maintain the functioning of society and to ensure that people don’t go around breaking laws wherever and whenever they want.
What are the functions that gangs fulfill (the needs they meet)? Suppose you have been hired as an urban planner for the city of Los Angeles. How could you arrange to meet the needs that gangs fulfill in ways that minimize violence and encourage youth to follow mainstream norms? The police’s definition of a gang is a group of individuals, juvenile and/or adult, who associate on a continuous basis, form an allegianance for a common purpose, and are involved in delinquent or criminal activities. It allows the police departments to take proactive law enforcement action normally before the gang gets an organized structure.
Civil law are laws associated with private relations between members of a community. Criminal laws are the laws associated with the punishment of those who commit crimes. This case falls under both criminal case and civil case. The reason I am saying these case facts fall under both types of cases is because it’s not only the elderly and their families against the aides (civil) but its also the families against the Good Samaritan home, and exposing to the public what type of company they are and what type of aides they hire to take care of the peoples family members that they may place under the care of Good Samaritan Home 2. What intentional torts do you think the nursing aides committed?
(Gray) When a crime has occurred its important to deal with it, to reduce the number of offences committed in society/ community. Fighting and solving crime involves a variety of support, the police force cannot do it on its own, and to prevent crime involves different agencies working together and local crime reduction initiatives. They enforce the laws and investigate crime. Depending on jurisdiction their core duties can be expanded to the following: Protecting the life and
Affect on society Community corrections affect society because some people do not feel safe knowing that there is a criminal out and about with the freedom to do whatever, he or she pleases. A person, whom commits a crime while in the community, will return to jail to finish up his or her time that he or she was sentenced, depending on the new crime committed, whether it is the same crime or not, the offender can have time added to his or her present sentencing. Hypothesis and Effectiveness Community corrections are forms of discipline that works when it is directed toward the correct group of people. Every person deserves a second chance, unless you are a person whom thinks that killing a person, is a good way to solve
The media has been known to work side by side in helping the police departments, but it has also been known to work against those in law enforcement. Those working in a field relating to reporting information to the public will say their responsibility is to the public, not law enforcement. There are some situations where it is true that journalist have a responsibility to the public to report the happenings in the world in a truthful and non bias manner. In some instances the media is attempting to do just that but can impact an open case by divulging information that was to be kept private. When it comes to media relations, many police departments and city managers follow the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).

Informal social control, however, are practiced by the citizens of the town without being directly told the rules. Social norms are what controls by the social control as law is to bigger and more formal rules. Social norm are the commonly held formations of suitable and anticipated behavior in a society or town.
City police officers are responsible for maintaining order, responding to emergency calls, and dealing with violence, and serious crime. Grant and Terry (2008), suggest that local agencies also take part in processing fingerprints, preventing and deterring crime, investigating violent crimes and property crimes and enforcing traffic laws. County Sheriffs have unique roles because they serve law enforcement (patrolling and investigating crimes), courts (Serving subpoenas and providing security for the courts), and corrections in that they maintain the county jails. The coroner or medical examiner’s roles vary as well because they investigate crime scenes; they conduct autopsies, and determine the
