Natasha Johnson Eng. 101 T-Th 12:30-1:45 Brains: To Eat or Not to Eat : A Comparison of Early Zombie Films to the Walking Dead Fast zombies, slow zombies, Haitian zombies, Riot Zombies, Flesh Eating zombies, Intelligent zombies, dumb zombies…..what do these all have in common might you ask? They all originated from the same basic origin: Fear of the dead rising back to life and overtaking our society as we now know it. For some reason the thought of our deceased loved ones coming back to life and preying on our brains strikes fear into the hearts of the living. Within the confinement of these pages I will illustrate what a “zombie” film should and should not entail, and how far the image of the zombie has progressed into our modern day visage of the term. The things that I will be comparing for you today are a few of the classic zombie films such as White Zombie, Night of the Living Dead, Shaun of the Dead and 28 Days Later to the modern day hit television drama The Walking Dead. To have a successful zombie film or show, you must have a great story line, lots of gore, some suspense, and really strong main characters the zombies themselves have to portray a strong character since they do not talk. The very first Zombie movie recorded was called White Zombie and this is the tale of a young woman turning into a zombie due to Haitian Voodoo magic. Now this in comparison is not like the zombie films of today and especially not when compared to The Walking Dead. There are several similarities between the early films like Night Of The Living Dead and The Walking Dead such as most start in a post-apocalyptic setting, where the virus has already spread to the point where containment is impossible, the only way to completely kill a zombie is by shooting it in the head or somehow damaging the head/brain area, and the easiest way to become a zombie is to get bit.
