Despite these clashes of perspective, the main conflict between mother and son derives from Julian’s inability to put his pride aside, accept the sacrifices his mother made for him, and move on from his lack of success in the real world. Julian sees himself as a martyr for African-Americans. He fantasizes about bringing home a black girlfriend just to frustrate his mother mad and sympathizing with all the hardships she has to endure because she is black (O’Connor 1023). Throughout his life and up until the day he dies, Malcolm X tries to pursue this ultimate goal of seeing white racism in a positive light and making something good come out of the events that happened in his life. The four factors that greatly influenced Malcolm X to become a successful activist were his family life, growing up and living in an urban ghetto environment, prison, and his religion. The horrific events of Malcolm’s childhood would have led anyone else to a depression and a downfall. However, these events sparked his reasoning for becoming a successful activist. When Malcolm Little was in the womb, members of the Ku Klux Klan broke all the windows in his family’s home in Omaha, Nebraska.
The laws were basically just a list of “could-nots”. In Richard Wright’s Black Boy, Wright explains his horrific experiences that occurred throughout his childhood. Even as a young child, he dealt with many beatings. Wright struggles to conform to his family’s rule. His family tried their best to mold him into a better man in order to survive the later years to come.
The characters from both plays are indirectly compared, for instance the two youngest sons, Cory and Biff. Cory and Biff were compared through football and their father's, the contrast between the boys were where they went in life and the relationship they had with their father's. Football was a passion for both Cory and Biff, neither of the boys played football past high school, but they were both good players. Cory was very driven to play football even when his father constantly disapproved. Biff didn't have the same drive that Cory had but he still loved the game, it was a lot easier for him to be more interested in football when he had the support from his father.

Ricky wants to play professional football, & Doughboy surrenders to the violence, alcohol, and crime surrounding him in his environment, but maintains a strong sense of pride and code of honor. Tré is the only boy out of the three with his father, Jason 'Furious' Styles (Laurence Fishburne). Furious teaches Tré responsibility, and doing the right thing no matter the circumstances. Todd Anderson Todd Anderson is considered a dynamic character because in the movie his character starts off as a timid and self doubting, and has no confidence in himself. Everyone expects him to be like his older brother. Later on in the movie he changed thanks to mr. keating. Mr. Keating talks him in being a free-thinking individual and leader, Todd Anderson was able over come the final obstacle of his instability only following after his friend Neils suicide.
Even women who were freeborn could not choose their husbands because that decision was left for her family to make. The lack of ability for a woman to make her own decisions contributed to the ambiguity between enslavement and being freeborn. Clifford, the son of Pa Palaganda, was known for having sexual relations with his female slaves. As Clifford became fond of his slave Ojebeta, he started to view her as a potential wife because she could read, write her name, sew, and cook civilized food. When Clifford disclosed his thoughts of one day marrying Ojebeta he simply told her what would transpire in a fairly non demanding way.

An event in the film ‘About A Boy’ directed by Chris and Paul Weitz that surprised me was when Will played by Hugh Grants, went up on stage to perform with Marcus played by Nicholas Hoult. Before the relationship between these two ‘boys’ started to develop, Will didn’t care about anything. Simply he was a care-free and self indulged man who didn’t care about anything in the world but himself.
