Liegh McInnis English 205-08 August 27, 2012 The critical analysis of “Boyz N the Hood” In 1991, John Singleton made a movie that would change a lot of young black people lives, that he named Boyz N the Hood. Boyz N the Hood was about crime and drama, which goes on a lot in our generation today. The movie involved actor Cuba Gooding Jr, Morris Chestnut, and Ice Cube. The three characters struggles coming up with hopes of one day moving out the hood. In this movie the young black people suffered from peer pressure, trying to pursue a dream, struggle to build a relationship with his mother. Cuba Gooding Jr. played the character Tre, who lived with his mother who played the role as a single parent. With society being the way it was she couldn’t discipline him the way he needed to be discipline. She struggled as a black mother, so she did what any woman would have done; Therefore, Tre mother sent him to live with his father for a male role model. Tre lived in the hood with his fathers, who raised him to make good decision and be responsible of his own actions. During the movie, Tre separated his action from his friends by not engaging in the activities that they were in. He did not steal, gangbang or sell drugs, which lead to a successful future and becoming a college student. By having a father for a positive role model, Tre was able to separate right from wrong and avoid peer pressure. Morris Chestnut played the character Ricky, who lived in the Hood with his mother, older half-brother, baby mother, and son. Being in the society that he was in, he struggled to pursue a college dream and become a successful football player. Ricky older brother Dough Boy was a gangster drug dealer, whom action inspired Ricky to become better than he were. Therefore, Ricky and his family had high hopes in him becoming a pro athlete.
