Boxers are one of the most loyal and compassionate breed of dogs on the planet, even though they came from a life of fighting and hunting. The breed was developed in Germany in the nineteenth century to be one of a fighting and hunting dog, but later on in the same century they became more of a show dog. They were seen in the theater and even the circus, because of their playful nature. This is why the breed we know today came from the dogs that were used to show. Boxers have been used for everything from a hunting dog to military and police work; which they are still used for today and of course also shows, but the most important role they play is one of family. Boxers are very intelligent, fearless, and alert yet; still have a clownish behavior and love to play. Boxers are very loyal to their family. They love human affection especially from children, and are very suspicious of strangers but rarely become aggressive unless they perceive a threat to their family. “Boxers play many roles in our lives. At various times they are protectors, guides, testers of patience, and models of endurance. At all times they are true companions who never stray far from our sides” (69). Boxers are so much fun to watch. They are a wonderful addition to families as a matter of fact, they become our four legged fur babies. “The very essence of the Boxer is his positive outlook on life. Never a "glass half empty" sort of dog, the Boxer contemplates each day as if he lived inside his own personal pleasure palace. He may as well have invented the game of keep away, thrilled as he is to have you, his adored master, try in vain to snatch his favorite squeaky out of those formidable jaws. Even into older age, the Boxer treasures his toys. Rushing about his yard at sometimes breakneck speed, he takes the greatest pride in being able to dodge around you at the last crucial second, sparing
