DonaldPhlegmII Phlegm 1 Born Without a Choice In a true story “Education is My Mother and Father” by David Chanoff, there is a group of young boys that had to endure hardships, heart ache and the taste of real happiness. These young boys are called the “Lost Boys of Sudan” part of the Dinka tribe who are fleeing Sudan to a Kenya Refugee Camp in 1992. Then opportunity aroused when an individual decided to offer them a chance at obtaining an education in the United States. The author quoted, “Learning has become over the years a survival mechanism, not only an internalized value but a driving force”. Sudan was in the middle of their civil war which involved Islamic and Arab groups attacking Christian people. The Dinka tribe children are seeing their relatives and friends murdered in cold blood. People in their tribe were attacked and eaten by lions while fleeing Sudan; over two million people lost their lives. The boys would do anything for an education and an artist by the name of Emmanuel Jal said “I would die for an education”. Education is what the Dinka’s wanted and eventually prayers were answered and a new day came. The Dinka’s are awakening to a new life style when arriving in the United States by an air plane. The schools in Africa were a mixture of students of all ages in the same class room. An eight year old student is getting the same education as an eighteen year old student.
