He writes his beliefs and thoughts down to tell the world. Suppressed from the government, this is Kovic's way of expressing his self and getting the word out to the general public in regards to the atrocities of the Vietnam War. Kovic believed that the war was wrong. Here is a person who believed in supporting his country and then came upon the realization that he and his country were wrong in their actions. On the other hand, this gives a person that has not experienced such an incident an insight into the feeling the helplessness, hopelessness, and lack of self worth a veteran may suffer.
They are one of the most unjustly-maligned groups in American history. It breaks my heart to see people like Pool Larry who served there country well and there for to be disrespected. Like his brother said,"I remember him always and am proud he served his country well. He, and all the casualties and MIAS, represent America's freedom." If only the world saw that when soliders came back from vietnam.
Patriots will support their country and help improve it in its darkest hours. The Pledge of Allegiance states exactly what a patriot should be. A patriot believes that this is one nation is indivisible and we believe in liberty and justice for all. Although Frank questions himself saying “Why the hell is John joining the military” (630) by the end, we have an author who is very proud and glad.. The audience will feel how Frank struggled with this choice that his son was making. By using this format the audience will be able to connect with Frank as he continues to go through a mix emotion of feelings as his son leaves. Frank Schaeffer shows his instant ethos by questioning and over thinking about John enlisting in the military. Schaeffer asks himself “ How could my son become a marine and What sort of person would he become life after the marines”(631) Nonetheless, he buys a book called making the marine corps just so he could get a grasp of what John would be doing.
His children had told him that what the U.S was doing was not right. They participated in the anti-war movement and protests. McNamara blamed himself for his wife’s stomach ulcer. McNamara seemed physically and mentally exhausted. He began to have severe chest pains.
Some families acted as if the vet only had been stationed at any other base. It was as if the families were apathetic to the subject (Maberry, and Hunt, n.d.). Many of the vets returning from the fighting came back with issues. Some of the issues experienced were drug use, mental issues, which is now called Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), physically disabled, or suffered from the poisoning of Agent Orange. Our country was not prepared for the multitude of issues that Vietnam would cause in the men.

Although the Tet Offensive was unsuccessful for the North Vietnamese Army, they showed that United States had seriously underestimated them and their capabilities.
Today we regret the actions that we made in war and so do other countries involved. Most of the time it was all the signs and messages before they had even left. Terrible pictures of propaganda depicting life if the enemy won making everyman feel it would be there fault if they didn’t help. Posters forcing them to join and even more posters dehumanizing the enemy. This happened on both sides and led to an unrelenting hate to each other.
Their way of living should not be respected, but it is true that each of them is somehow struggling with their lives The antagonist and narrator of the story, Jake Barnes, experienced World War I as a soldier. During the war, a number of people were wounded and lost their morality on the battlefields. Jake is one of them who is suffering from the trauma from the war. Jake has an injury from the war and as a result, he is unable to physically make a love to women. This disability left him psychologically and morally lost, and takes his masculinity away from him.
