Born into Brothels: The Children and Pictures Speak Evaluation Zana Briski achieved a Master’s Degree in Theology and is an accomplished photographer. She has spent many years seeking help, hope and social change due to the treatment of women, young girls and infant girls in India. Zana first sought help to stop female infanticide in India. She wanted to bring awareness and social change from the brutal killing of baby girls because they are seen as burdens and of little worth. Her next project became the children of prostitutes in Calcutta. She wanted to document the lives of women and children forced into prostitution by their husbands and families in order to support their families. After seeing the children’s environment and learning that there was little or no hope for the young girls to escape the life in which they were born. Zana decided to team up with Ross Kaufmann; an established director who has worked for PBS, The Discovery Channel and many other projects. Together they decided to film the lives of the prostitutes and their children with the hopes of ending the social stigma given to them and improve their lives through social change and education. Zana Briski uses powerful and moving pictures and narratives made by the children in the red light district of India to bring about social change from the people and government, appeal to contributors of charities and educators to help build a school and give the children a chance at life without prostitution and abuse. Allowing the children to tell and show their stories in their own words and pictures makes the documentary very touching, believable and effective.
