Analyzing and Interpreting Literature 5 Dec 2011 Flannery O’Conner: The Displaced Person Flannery O’Conner was born on the 25th of March, 1925 in Savannah, Georgia where she spent much of her childhood. When her father was diagnosed with lupus she moved with her family to the rural town of Milledgeville where she lived along with other members of her mother’s family. In 1945 she was awarded a journalism scholarship to attend Iowa State University. (Flannery) It was there that she would decide to pursue a career in fiction rather than fact. After graduating with a Masters in Fine Arts O’Connor spent the next several years living and writing in New York State until she was diagnosed with Lupus, the disease that had killed her father.
Marian said she felt fortunate to have found refuge. On the other hand, Nadia was 17 years old, her husband cut off her nose and ear while she was sleeping, she has undergone six operations and need more. For example in “Destroying Avalon” Avalon had to face the death of her best friend Marshall who took his own life because of being bullied for so many years and not letting anyone to support him through his tough times. “Marshall is dead” was repeated in the book to emphasize the feeling of grief Avalon faced. In “The Colour Purple” death and loss is shown when both Celie’s children are taken away from her at birth and is given the impression that they where killed. Bullying occurs the day you are born by society determining colours, interest and behaviours that suit the type of gender you are. However bullying doesn’t really show it’s self until we go to school, this style of bullying can be verbal, physical or electronic.
David came from a troubled background moving from squat to squat and had witnessed his mother, Moira, being physically and sexually abused. David’s mother turned to prostitution in order to pay for her drug addiction. pter sister was also sold for sex to pay for Moira’s drugs. David and his sister became’ lost children’ and severely neglected, often starved and physically beaten. After the death of his mother, Social Services stepped in, unfortunately, efforts to keep the siblings together, was thwarted due to David’s challenging behaviour including his sexually harmful behaviours.
Sarah, having dealt with the things that she has dealt with, has evolved into heck of woman. When she was young, she was abused by her mentally unstable father. Sarah had told everybody that her mom accidently spilled a bowl of boiled spaghetti on her, but in reality her father burned her face with a wood stove at the age of three. No three year old should have to go through what has happened to Sarah;
It got worse and not only was he hitting my mom but now me as well. This continued till I was about 11 or 12. My dad cheated on my mom, my mom kicked him out and he didn’t come back for about a week or so. Then my mom cheated on my dad with his cousin and it got ugly a fight between my parents broke out again and I walk outside my room
Kate Chopin Biography Kate Chopin was born in St. Louis, Missouri. She was born on February 8, 1850 to Thomas O'Flaherty and Eliza Faris. Her father was Irish and her mother was French Canadian, so she became bilingual at a very young age. As a child, she was an avid reader of fairy tales, poetry, and classic novels. Growing up, she was most widely influenced by her mother and grandmother after her father was killed in a train accident when she was four years old.
At an early age Angelou was raped by a friend of her mother’s while visiting her mother in St. Louis. This violent act left the young girl traumatized. When her uncle’s heard about what happen they killed the man who raped her. She felt as though his death was her fault and she did not speak for five years. When Angelou was 12 years old an educated black woman from Stamps by the name of Bertha Flowers helped her to break this silence.
(See "Alternative Books.") Plot Summary Fourteen year old Celie has led a very rough life. Her mother is very sick, and when she goes to visit the doctor Celie is left alone with her father, Fonso. While the mother is gone, Fonso rapes Celie. Celie's mother dies soon after and now Fonso rapes Celie more and more often, saying "You gonna do what your mammy wouldn't" (p. 1).
They thought they knew each other well enough to get married, but as Carl says it in the text “And once we did it seemed too late” (p.8, l.66). So now he thinks that he is stuck with this life. With a family that he feels separated from “they didn’t seem connected to him nor did he feel connected to them”(p.10, l.134). The only way for Carl to find comfort, for his sister’s illness, is in his sister’s friend, who is going through the same kind of pain. But since Carl moved to Worland with his wife and daughter a year ago, he hasn’t been able to stop thinking of Lily, a woman who attends his church.
