Bombing of Hiroshima Diary

August 6, 1945 It was a beautiful day. It was just beginning with the birds chirping, the warm air, and the bright yellow sunlight. I am sitting on the porch with my wife enjoying the morning with my newspaper in one hand and a cup of tea in the other. About 7 o’clock I heard an air raid alarm of which I have heard for several days so I didn’t pay much attention to it. At 8:00 the air raid alert had been called off. I soon went back to reading my paper. Suddenly, a bright flash of light startled me. I immediately ran to the door to see outside. I hear a loud explosion and glass is flying at me. Moments later I found myself lying on the grass in the front yard with glass and wood all over my arms and legs. I had no idea of what had just happened, it was still a blur. Then all of a sudden I hear my wife screaming for help so I ran and found her stuck underneath a wooden post that had fallen from the porch. I hurried to lift the post off of her and as soon as I lifted it off, she let go a sigh of relief. We both scurried to get up and see what had just happened. I just realized how bad I am injured. This terrible pain just shot through my left arm and then my right. I ran inside, well tried to run, there was wood, glass, and nails everywhere so it was hard to run without tripping. I did many times before actually reaching the bathroom to get bandaged up. I quickly grabbed the ace bandage, some antibiotic ointment and ran back outside. It looked like a tornado had just gone through my street. There were tree branches, rocks, and dust everywhere. I looked to my wife and said, they had bombed us this is serious now. She said nothing. I then went to my neighbor’s house to see if they were okay. They were fine with just few cuts and bruises. I still don’t know how everyone else is though so my neighbor and I went to check on some people. I went and got the bandages
