The Commercial Airplanes segment is expected to grow by over 23% in 2009, and the Integrated Defense segment is also expected to grow by over 5%. Boeing’s stock underperformed in 2008 due to the global economic recession, an extended machinists’ union strike that halted production, and complications from the Dreamliner’s production that further delayed the airplanes first testing flights until the end of this year or early 2010. Company Overview The Boeing Company is involved in the design, development, manufacture, sale and support of commercial jetliners, military aircraft, satellites, missile defense, human space flight, and launch systems and services. The Company operates in five principal segments: Commercial Airplanes, Boeing Military Aircraft, Network and Space Systems, Global Services and Support, and Boeing Capital Corporation. Boeing Military Aircraft, Network and Space Systems, Global Services and Support segments comprise the Company’s Integrated Defense Systems (IDS) business of the company. Commercial Airplanes Segment The Commercial Airplanes segment is involved in developing, producing and marketing commercial jet aircraft and providing related support services, principally to the commercial airline industry worldwide. Boeing is a producer of commercial aircraft and offers a family of commercial jetliners designed to meet a range of passenger and cargo requirements of domestic and non-United States airlines. Its family of commercial jet aircraft includes the 737 next-generation, narrow-body model and the 747, 767, 777 and 787 wide-body models.
