Body image is how people relate to his or her body. The term body image is used to describe your physical appearance. It also describes peoples feelings and thoughts towards their bodies and how they think others may see them as. Due to the many, 400 - 600 advertisements that bombard us everyday in magazines, on TV and in newspapers, seventy-six per cent of Australians are disappointed with the way their body looks. This is because people compare their bodies with the bodies of men and women advertised in media. My partner Demi and I asked 30 students at Mater Dei Collage a question about how media affects the way they see their bodies and feel about their bodies. “Due to watching women with perfect bodies, for example models, on television, in movies, fashion magazines and advertising. Does this make you feel more insecure about your self-appearance and body image? Does this make you think more about your body?” 26 out of 30 girls said yes and 4 said no this gives us a total percentage of 87% of girls who think it does affect them and 13% of girls who says it does not affect them. People who are generally unhappy with their bodies and don’t seek healthy nutrition information may develop eating disorders. Eating disorders are unhealthy relationships with food that may include fasting, constant dieting, or binging. More than half of teenage girl are or think they should be on diets. They want to loose some or all of the 40 pounds that females naturally gain between the ages of 8 and 14. About 3% of these teens go to far to become anorexic or bulimic. Social media leads to a high amount of insecurity in teens, which could lead to suicide and or depression. 80% of women say that images of women on television, in movies, fashion magazines, Facebook and advertising makes them feel insecure.
