Body Fat and Eating Disorders Paper A human body is composed of water, protein, connective tissue, fats, carbohydrates and DNA. Water is present in the largest quantity in a human body. For example, an adult male body is around 57% water. Body composition, which refers to the relative proportions of fat and lean tissue that make up the body, affects the risks associated with excess body weight. Fat is not bad for the body if it is at the recommended amount in the body, having more than the recommended percentage of body fat increases health risks, whereas having more lean body mass does not. In general, women store more body fat than men do, so the level that is healthy for women is somewhat higher than the level that is healthy for men. A healthy level of body fat for young adult females is between 21 and 32% of total weight; for men it is between 8 to 19%. Excess body fat brings along many complications in a human body and increases the chances of many illnesses. In the United States today, a staggering 68% of adults are either overweight or obese. The numbers have increased dramatically over the last 5 decades and continue to rise at an alarming rate. Obesity affects everyone regardless of age, gender, and ethnicity and is a cause of concern as it leads to many hearth related problems. Having too much body fat increases a person’s risk of developing a host of chronic health problems, including high blood pressure, heart disease, high blood cholesterol, diabetes, gallbladder disease, arthritis, sleep disorders, respiratory problems, menstrual irregularities and cancers of the breast, uterus, prostate and colon. There are many factors that lead to obesity. More than often is the diet, which may include of excessive eating, junk food, extremely low physical activity, too much sugar, fat and carbohydrate intake and also some social issues such as, lack of knowledge
