When the war in Iraq began on the 20th of March 2003 the decision to go to war was already surrounded with controversy because of all the rumours cooked up by anti war protesters. One of the main keys of going to war was oil and terrorism but as the months went on these objectives were unfinished with extended deadlines and more objectives were made. Has the war in Iraq benefited society in any way? In this essay I intend to look at the controversy surrounding the war in Iraq how we have all had to pay the economical cost of being at war with a country whose leader is now deceased and the terrorists who preside there and who kill our men with barbaric methods of execution and scare tactics and their old favourite the road side bomb. When President Bush told Americans that they were going to war because of the imminent threat of Saddam’s weapons of mass destruction and his relations to terrorism but if this was the case why did the Americans press on with the war even though no weapons were found and no relations with terrorists were uncovered?
After reading The Killer Angels I am now more open to history as a subject and the literature that comes along with it. To read about how unexpected the battle actually was and how all of the commanding officers acted and felt amazed me. Michael Shaara put together the facts in such a way that made the novel not only readable but captivating to the reader, making me not want to put the book down. There were many mistakes on the confederate side which is what, I believe cause the union victory but, many men fought and died for what they believed in and that courage make them all victors in their own way. Although the civil war was not won that day, it was one of the deciding factors that eventually lead to the union victory and the freeing of the slaves, which would have most likely not have been accomplished if not for the men on that battlefield.
The American citizens were completely against the napalm strike bombing because the napalm strikes to the skin, and the injuries were severe. US troops would go on a manhunt for Vietcong soldiers in large amount, so they get ambushed easily by the camouflaged Vietcong soldiers. Ho chi minh ordered the Vietcong troops to dig a very wide tunnel underground so the soldiers can move freely, and learn their way around the country. This was a disadvantage to America because surprise attacks were held against the US troops from the hidden entrances for the
These findings were seemingly ignored. Napalm was equally as deadly. This led to widespread death of civilians, as the Americans attacked villages suspected to shelter Guerrillas. Agent Orange still causes birth defects and has cancerous links today, this is likely to carry on into the future. For American veterans there have
First, there are the obvious strategic and tactical similarities. American troops are now fighting a guerrilla war in Iraq. Urban warfare has become the norm with insurgents staying close to U.S. troops, often engaging civilians to support or shield their operations. As a result, the uncertain battleground of Iraq poses enormous challenges for American soldiers, seeking to separate combatants from civilians without alienating most Iraqis. We face in Iraq, like we did in Vietnam, an enemy who refuses to play by our rules and is clearly willing to die for his beliefs.
Much literature has been written about the events that occurred, the battles that were fought and the innovation and weapons that were used, but it is the people that were most important and pivotal in the war. The people far out weighed the battles, the weapons or machinery and it was the people and there stories that have and will remain victorious throughout modern American memory. Some may say that WWII was not the good war because America entered the war last and did not witness the majority of destruction, ethnic cleansing and killing caused by the Nazi regime. Some say believe that it’s because the war was fought elsewhere so damages and casualties weren’t seen on home land unlike in Europe. Whilst some say that WWII was not the good war because America simply took the easy route towards the end of the war with the introduction of nuclear weapons on
It often came down to hand to hand contact and quick thinking. This war scared almost all the soldiers for life, the ones who lived through it all at least. The total number of US casualties in the Vietnam War was 58,220. The ones who did live didn’t get a welcome home either. When the Vietnam Veterans returned back home they were treated worse than some of the terrorists now a days.
Most soldiers would not even know the cause of the war they just know that ‘VC’ are the enemy and you must “Kill them”. The way the soldiers track the VC like animals is almost as though they have been compelled to do so. One soldier wrote “If [we] don’t kill them they will kill [us]” these kind of thoughts are forced into soldiers head whether they are true or
The parallels of these two devastating wars are begging to pile up, yet there are some key differences. I will go into detail on the similarities, the differences, and how the civilians viewed the war. Both of these wars resulted in the death of many innocent men and women, American soldiers, and forgiven military forces and they shall be remembered for honorably serving their nations. Both the Vietnam and Iraq war we started under false presidencies. In Iraq
Even though the troops who die volunteer and fight with pride, the United States should end the war on terror because it is causing damage to the economy and too many troops’ lives have been lost. Our death toll since the war started in Iraq and Afghanistan has damage us as Americans, because our death toll
