Blatant Forms of Corruption

1413 Words6 Pages
SECTION A 1. Corruption has a devastating effect on poor people especially those in the rural areas. Corruption costs the government millions every year, money that could have been spent on delivering services. Where resources are scarce and many people need those resources, corruption can set in and some people get an unfair advantage because they cannot afford to bribe officials to do them special favors. Where there is corruption the community collapses, the infrastructure (water, roads, schools, hospital)becomes compromised, people who deserve and are qualified do not get jobs instead the jobs are given to unqualifying people because they are related to those in powers. With corruption the rich become richer and the poor become poorer. The educational and health system are compromised and the unemployment and death rate goes up, there are too many strikes because people don’t get the money they are entitled to. 2. In most societies people seek their personal benefit first and the public interest later. To combat corruption the anti corruption agencies need to be formed and fight corruption by all means. Maximum punishment to life imprisonment should be imposed to corrupt people. People should be held accountable for their actions and whatever that belongs to the state should be accounted for failing which people responsible should be dealt with accordingly. Corruption must be treated as purely criminal offence. With anti corruption agencies formed corrupt people can be caught and prosecuted and with maximum punishment people will refrain from corruption. In public sectors though every public servant and member of the public has a role to play in watching out for, and reporting corruption there should be special staff dedicated to rooting out corruption e.g. auditors, security staff and compliance officers.
