Black in Latin America is a four-part series on the influence of African descent on Latin America produced by Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates, Jr. He featured six Latin-American countries in the series: Haiti, Dominican Republic, Cuba, Brazil, Mexico, and Peru. Many people don’t know that only 450,000 Africans arrived in the United States. More than 10.5 million were taken to the Caribbean and Latin America. Brazil has the 2nd largest black population in the world.
        After I watched all the parts of this great documentary, it makes me extremely proud to be African America, but it also hurts me to see others like me who have such contempt for their African Heritage, but sometimes we have to understand, this could very well be a consequence or a lasting effect of slavery. One thing that many people may not have realized that America is not the only country that deals with racial inequality. The man in charge of this documentary has been through a well publicized act of racism. Henry Gates was arrested on the front porch of his house. He was trying to go into his home, but policemen stopped him and arrested him. The belief is that they thought the neighborhood was too nice for a black man to be in.
                    Haitians have a rich history, regardless of how other countries may have treated them, or ostracized them. Haiti is the first free black republic; a huge accomplishment by any standards really. Haitians were originally brought to the Dominican Republic to work jobs that Dominicans would refuse, and because of this, another group of people began to think of themselves as better than the Haitians, The Dominicans. In certain places, being called a Haitian is still an insult. Many countries refused to acknowledge Haiti as a free country, great countries such as France, Britain, and both of the Americas.
