Week two found us focusing on database systems and the different types of e-commerce and the effects that they have on our everyday life in and away from work as well as the growing demand for efficiency and ease of use. Databases and e-commerce are collectively becoming the norm in our everyday lifestyles from the office, being able to maintain customer information, inventory, revenue and expenses, schedules, to the home where some keep track of bills, coupons for the extreme couponer to keeping track of our children’s schedules and activities. Databases are used to store information, run reports and keep track of customer and personal information. They are needed in the work place to maintain order and be able to easily access information by everyone that is using the system. Database can be designed for the specific need of a business or organization to the general system which can do a little of everything such as Excel or Access. Each database that is used can run reports, create charts and graphs, analyze data as well as be able to generate projections and losses based on the information that has been inputted. Advantages of Database Systems Reduces redundancy Greater data integrity Improved data access Improved security Greater information storage Reduced labor costs Disadvantages of Database Systems Complexity Costly System Crashes Potential Hacking Electronic Commerce has become a normal way of life for a great deal of consumers from being able to purchase merchandise, tracking mailing, receiving and paying bills as well as to merchandisers advertising their wares receiving payment to financial institutions operating solely using the ecommerce systems.
