Biotechnology, or otherwise known as genetic engineering, is a field of biology that involves the use of living organisms and bioprocesses in engineering, technology, medicine and other fields requiring byproducts. The whole purpose and concept of biotechnology is to use living organisms or other biological systems in the manufacture of drugs or other products for environmental management. Examples of biotechnology can be found anywhere, even in your own home. The Advil you take when you’re having a sick day is one of the many forms of biotechnology you have been exposed to. Much like many other types of technologies out there, there is more than one profession you can specialize if you’re working in the biotechnical industry. Society has noted them and categorized them. They are: Blue Biotechnology, which is a term that is used to describe the marine and aquatic applications of biotechnology. Green Biotechnology, which is biotechnology applied to agricultural processes. An example would be the designing of transgenic plants to grow under specific environments in the presence and/or absence of chemicals. One hope is that green biotechnology might produce more environmentally friendly solutions than traditional industrial agriculture. Red Biotechnology, which is biotechnology that applies to medical processes. Some examples are the designing of organisms to produce antibiotics, and the engineering of genetic cures through genetic manipulation. White biotechnology, which is also widely known as industrial biotechnology, is biotechnology applied to industrial processes. An example is the designing of an organism to produce a useful chemical. Biotechnology is a very broad form of technology, and it branches out into more specific categories. Think of it as a government.
