Harrison Pajovich Mrs. Valloor Career Exploration 7 May 2012 Biomedical Engineer Biomedical engineers apply engineering principles and medicinal science to improve healthcare. This includes researching, designing and developing medical products, such as joint replacements or robotic surgical instruments. Biomedical engineers also design and modify equipment for clients with special needs and work in rehabilitation settings. Biomedical Engineering originated during World War II. Biologists were appointed to do work on advances in radar technology. Working with this new technology prepared them for the electronic developments in medicine in the years following the war. The next generation of biologists, however, did not have any training with new technology. The technology that biologists used advanced so promptly that it surpassed the prior generation's understanding. A bridge was necessary to cover the gap between biology and technical knowledge. Doctors and biologists with an understanding and interest of engineering, along other engineers with an interest in biology, became the first biomedical engineers. Those primarily concerned with medicine became the first biomedical engineers (Tuleimat). The job is attractive to students because it brings together math and science. Those interested in health care but are also good at math and problem-solving would excel in this career. Biomedical engineering is an interesting career that is challenging, innovative, and intriguing (McDavid). One school that has an accredited biomedical engineering program is Columbia University, an Ivy League School, located in the heart of New York City. The school is relatively close to home as it is only one hundred twenty-two miles from Royersford. To practice, biomedical engineers need a Bachelor’s degree, though most have a master’s degree.
