Biomedical engineers are primarily tasked with using their knowledge of engineering processes and medical procedures in order to create new equipment and procedures for the advancement of medical science. Along with leading physicians in their fields, these men and women often conduct research in order to create better medical products for general use, such as artificial organs or prosthetic limbs. They also design many machines for everyday use, such as automatic insulin pumps and MRI machines. The majority of biomedical engineers work in medical, academic, industrial, and governmental research laboratories. Other employment opportunities exist in hospitals and undersea and space programs.

It was going to my future. I’m now volunteering at Tempe St. Lukes Hospital and devoting my time not only to marching band, but my career as a Laboratory Medical Technologist. When I Graduate I want to audition for the Marine Corps Band, where they will pay my tuition to Yale where I will study Medical Technology. Hopefully that’s not all. I want to help people who are in desperate need for medical needs, like in Africa.
At this Center the patients are Cancer related. As I spend more time as an intern at this Center I was inspired by Dr. Howard Bruckner work how he help and gave hope to many of these people, had myself raise some questions on the concepts and wonder what it would be like to be a part of the Bruckner Oncology team or somewhat relate to this field. I believe that Medical Assistant program classes at ASA College help gave me an opportunity to pursue my passion for helping those with medical problems and let me feel at ease on the first hand training at the Center of Bruckner Oncology. At the Bruckner Oncology Center I learn to Answering phones and making appointments ordering supplies, greeting patients, pulling and filing patient charts, calling in or faxing prescriptions, converting charts to electronic charting. Hopefully I can take these skills I learn and better myself in life.

The university of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, located in Philadelphia was the first school of medicine in the U.S. founded in 1765. But the first University for Physicians was founded in 1518 in London, greatly due to the work of Thomas Linacre, an English medical humanist (Withey 24). Outside of London though, there was an array of people calling themselves doctors, physicians, and even other names such as “'Medicus” or “anatomy” while learning the trade on the job, for some as short as only a year. Nowadays, Physicians can be one of the toughest professions to get into. All physicians have to work long excruciating hours, yet have to constantly be on call whenever there is an emergency, that make their family life unstable.
Andrew Pollack, of the New York Times wrote a descriptive article, “Engineering by Scientists on Embryo Stirs Criticism.” He provides an example of this altering. At Cornell University, they took an embryo that did not have the ability to become a child, and inserted a fluorescent protein. This gave it one extra chromosome. The fluorescent protein survived, causing the cells in the embryo to glow, and carried the protein into the daughter cell (1). While this was important research, “A spokesman for the National Institutes of Health said the Cornell work would not be classified as gene therapy,” only because “a test-tube embryo is not considered a person under the regulations” (Pollack 1) Right now, that leaves this research as something to be studied, not acted upon
It is turning out to be a challenge to fund a college education. Scholarships are the best way for me to keep advancing into the medical field. Not only will this scholarship reward with money but it is prestigious and an honor to receive one. It proves to others that you work diligently for what you want and it gives recognition and the credit earned through hard work and dedication. I want to be the one to show this commitment as I progress through a doctorate degree.
