Abstract This paper is a biomechanical analysis of long distance runners. It explains what to focus on when examining a runner, like posture, gait, and foot-strike. The area of interest is the lower extremity. The lower extremity muscles will be discussed and how they impact the running process. The way a runner strikes the ground greatly affects the impact on the overall body, and further helps to determine injury. Sagittal plane motion plays a major role in running, and if done correctly, helps to balance the runner to prevent falling or other discrepancies. Some common issues of faulty mechanics are discussed as well as the ways in which they can be corrected. Biomechanical Analysis Term Paper By means of research and analysis, this paper’s intent is to better explain, understand, and elaborate on the biomechanical pattern of running, and how predominately distance running affects the body, as well as how the body in turn affects the efficiency of the running. The movement pattern of running will be studied, as well as the gait cycle, the activation of muscles and their use, and even how elite runners can differ from average runners in their foot strike pattern. The lower body will be the main focus in this analysis, looking at how it plays a role in this very popular and widely used human movement activity. Literature Review: Running has exploded in popularity in recent years, which has led to a dramatic rise in gait analysis. Most studies tend to focus on foot function, but when factoring in the gait as well as proper movement and biomechanics, you can end up with a very effective performance enhancer. (Kasmer, 2013) Putting a focus on foot function within running has been fairly successful in helping to reduce pain and increase comfort, which tends to be popularly done with the use of orthotics, or by simply correcting or enhancing footwear.
