Using Material from Item 2B and elsewhere, asses the view that an ageing population creates problems for society. Many western societies such as the United Kingdom are experiencing the social, political and economic issues that are associated with an ageing population. Rising life expectancy poses a number of problems. People are living longer due to medical advancements (including the NHS) and improved sanitation. This has resulted in more services being needed to support the continually ageing population.
Short term this can be good for you however over a prolonged period it can have an adverse effect on our health. Research has shown that there are links between stress and diseases such as heart attacks and strokes, and if nothing is done to stop this, the likelihood of illness will increase or recovery from illness may take longer than necessary”. There is an rising demand in Australia for health workers. This shortage is caused by a number of factors relating to supply versus demand (Duckett, 2005). The population is ageing, a combination of lifestyle and environmental factors are increasing the burden of disease and causing a greater strain on the health workforce. The types of diseases associated with these factors are contributing to a requirement for particular skill mixes within the workforce. Due to an international shortage of health care professionals, Australia is competing worldwide to increase its own workforce.
Stress also increases the heart rate and can lead to the increase of blood pressure, thus Hypertension and can lead to Coronary Heart Disease (CHD). Although this disease can be caused by the indirect effects. Indirect effects of stress are associated with the bad habits that stress causes us to take part in, these included smoking, poor diet and alcohol abuse. These poor habits can thus lead to ill-effects on one’s health. These issues are more related to chronic stress rather than acute stress and it occurs for a long period, thus affecting health for a longer period.
Immune System Disorders Systemic Lupus Erythematosis (SLE) Lupus is a disease that leads to long-term inflammation of the particular tissue. It is an autoimmune system disorder in which the body mistakenly attacks healthy tissues. It can damage healthy tissue of the skin, joint, kidneys, brain, and other organs. It’s underlying cause is not fully known but may also be caused by certain drugs. SLE is more common in women than men and can occur at any age but often most seen in people ages 10-50.
The traditional risk factors for coronary artery disease are high LDL cholesterol, low HDL cholesterol, high blood pressure, family history, diabetes, smoking, being post-menopausal for women and being older than 45 for men, obesity may also be a risk factor. Once the inner wall of an artery is damaged, fatty deposits (plaques) made of cholesterol and other cellular waste products tend to accumulate at the site of injury in a process called atherosclerosis. If the surface of these plaques breaks or ruptures, blood cells called platelets will clump at the site to try to repair the artery. This clump can block the artery, leading to a heart attack. Lifestyle changes and medicines can help control CAD.
Some other risk factors include infections such as AIDS, EBV, H. pylori, HTLV-1, and Hepatitis C. The chance of developing this disease increases with age, though the disease can occur in any age (National Cancer Institute, 2008). There are several symptoms that people experience when they have NHL. Some of the most common symptoms include:
As statistics show, there has already been an increase in the cost of health care partially due to the shortage in health care practitioners and the need to offer higher reimbursement for treatments. If predictions are true, and there is a shortage of 125,000 physicians by the year 2025, the cost of health care will increase more rapidly. Because health care and therefore an individual’s life is considered priceless, there are demand shifters that often affect the demand curve of a health care product. As demonstrated in the example above, physician loyalties and experience are just two of the many types of demand shifters. This demand shifters can cause an even steeper rise in health care cost in the real world.
Your risk of stroke is increased if a close family member had a stroke before age 65. If you've had a previous stroke or a TIA, your risk of stroke is greater. South Asian or African-Caribbean origin are at a higher risk. Other diseases can increase the risk of a stroke such as high blood pressure, heart disease, high cholesterol, diabetes and atherosclerosis. People with these conditions must adhere to their plan of care.
There are also many causes of PTSD, from victims of child abuse; people affected by terrorist attacks, violent crime victims, to war situations. The focus of this paper is on combat or war time post traumatic stress disorder. Combat-related PTSD has a higher lifetime frequency for men than women. It has a larger probability of delayed inception, sometimes decades, and has a much greater chance of not being agreeable to treatment, so combat post traumatic stress disorder seems to be a particularly toxic form of PTSD. “Veterans with PTSD have greater problems holding a job, in terms of unemployment and being fired; greater problems in terms of marriage, both divorce and separation or spousal abuse; poor health; increased limitations to physical function; and more likely to perpetrate violence” (Friedman,
