Ovais Malik 10/10/13 Biology Richard Morris Risk factors for cardiovascular disease: This is the narrowing of artries in the body. Whilst the causes have not been fully established yet there are several factors that contribute the developing the disease and there are many active steps to take to reduce the risks. Risk factors can fall into two categories: Modifiable and Non-modifiable Non modifiable: * Age- risk of conducting cardiovascular disease increases with age * Gender- men have a greater risk at a younger age as females have hormonal protection up until menopause * Family history- you’re at a higher risk if a family member develops cardiovascular disease at a younger age ( for example a male whos under 55 and a female who’s under 65) * Ethnicity- some reasearch indicates that people living in the UK of Afro-Caribbean and South Asian origin are more likely to conduct the disease Modifiable: * Smoking- it damages artery walls and puts extra strain on the heart * Solution- take a health plan to quit smoking * Cholesterol- builds up fatty deposits in artery wall * Solution- reduce consumption of foods rich in saturated fats and try and intake more fibre * Stress- solution is relaxation * Inactivity- if you live a sedentry lifestyle, try to include everyday activities in your life eg taking the stairs instead of lift or walking short distances instead of driving. * Obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes- all of these conditions require you to regualate your diet and to eat less salty and fatty foods.
