Enzymes Abstract Lactase is an enzyme found in the small intestine that breaks down lactoase into the products galactose and glucose. Lactase can be purchased in many forms and one form is the pill form in which people take when they are lactose intolerant. These people lack the enzyme lactase, and cannot break down the sugar lactose into its component parts. Lactose, the sugar found in milk, is a disaccharide composed of glucose and galactose. Sucrose will be also used in the labs.
The purpose of this lab is to ……………… It’s predicted that if monosaccharaides and disaccharides are tested for sweetness, then the disaccharide will be more senses it has more sugar bonds than a monosaccharide. It’s also predicted that if monosaccharide isomers and disaccharide isomers are used in anaerobic respiration, then more gas will be produced by monosaccharaides. Procedure- see page 68 +5 Materials: Water, fermentation tubes for each kind of sugar, yeast, tape and marker for labeling, paper towel, sugar Data: Figure 1 You have extra
More saliva is produced in order to begin the procedure of breaking down food so that the body can absorb it. The pharynx receives the food from the mouth and swallowing is done here. Swallowing is partly a reflex and partly voluntary control, but the structure of the mouth is highly involved. The tongue and the soft palate push the food into the pharynx, closing off the trachea, allowing the food to enter the oesophagus. The oesophagus extends from the pharynx and behind the trachea to the stomach.
Until you open the bottle and pour a glass of soda, the gas mostly stays suspended in the liquid and cannot expand to form more bubbles, which gases naturally do. When you drop the Mentos into the soda, the gelatin and gum from the dissolving candy break the surface tension. This disrupts the water mesh, so that it takes less work to expand and form new bubbles. Each Mentos candy has thousands of tiny pits all over the surface. These tiny pits are contain perfect places for carbon dioxide bubbles to form.
Frequency Of Muscle Mastication In this lab we were attempting to find the different frequencies that are caused by doing different things with your jaw. Such as, clenching your jaw, or eating a carrot. We tested the different frequencies using a Vernier EKG Sensor. This showed us the electrical activity being generated by the movements of the jaw. The specific purpose of this experiment, is to examine the electrical activity generated by chewing and see how food texture influences the strength of contraction in the masseter muscle of the jaw.
The diet is not necessarily a low-carb diet as it doesn’t eliminate carbohydrates. However, most carbs are prohibited since they contain sugar. The Sugar Buster Diet is a high protein/low carbohydrate diet that greatly reduces refined sugar, white flour, white rice and some high glycemic fruits. The theory behind this diet is that white flour and refined sugar creates excessive insulin production. Too much insulin secretion will cause the body to store fat rather than burn fat.
Along with extracts from the plant itself, other active ingredients on the label of the supplement used in this experiment include caffeine and green tea extract. Since Hoodia is a fairly new product, there are not many reliable studies published on the effects of Hoodia on human appetite. Since it is coupled with similar products as Bitter Orange, it is assumed the products’ effects on the appetite are very similar. Therefore, a hypothesis and prediction similar to that concerning the effects of Bitter Orange can be formed. The hypothesis reached before experimentation was that since Tetrahymena lack a nervous system, which is the main body system involved in producing the desired
Discuss the importance of teeth in human nutrition Teeth perform mechanical digestion thus increasing the surface area of food for salivary amylase to work and for the enzymes of the stomach and small intestine to work more efficiently 2. Describe how food passes through the esophagus Food is pushed down the esophagus to the stomach through the process of peristalsis. Wave-like contractions alternate between contraction and relaxation to push the food through the entire digestive tract from the esophagus through the stomach, small intestine and large intestine. 3. Why would the enzymes in your mouth not work in your stomach and the enzymes in your stomach not work in your mouth?
As we study earlier that the role of digestive system is to break down food into smaller particles for easily absorption, why cardiovascular system is to transport material (nutrients) around the body and the respiratory system is for supplying and delivering of oxygen and blood throughout the body. The first area that they interact is during the process where digestive system breaks down the food for easy absorption of nutrients. And through the process the inner wall of the small intestine which is called villi (these are tiny, single, thick cell, and has its blood capillaries is thick, single cell) helps to increase the surface area for absorption, the cardiovascular system then transport these nutrients where it is needed in the body. Due to that the villi contain a one cell thick epithelial layer, which allow a fast absorption of food through facilitated diffusion and active transport. This process of moving of particles from higher concentration to a lower concentration is said to be diffusion, and the molecules that is diffused are glucose, amino acid and fatty acid which is dissolved into the blood plasma and this is then transport into the cell for the use of the body.
This involves no cooking, no microwaving, no processing, no genetically engineering, no using pesticides, or herbicides. The raw food diet works by first helping regulate the bodies’ enzymes. Enzymes control everything in our bodies from speech to hormone production, and raw food is full of enzymes. Enzymes help us to digest and metabolize the food we eat, and when we are getting good nutrient value from the food we eat, we are less likely to over eat. It also works because it is an alkaline diet, which means it helps remove acid wastes, or toxins from the body, many of which are found in our body fat.
