Analysis: When examining the results, the two substances that were the controls were water and Alka-Seltzer. To determine this, the data had to be viewed and the only substances tested in this lab that were not biological materials were the water and Alka-Seltzer. Therefore, the water and Alka-Seltzer were the controls for this lab. The pH level is the measure of the acidity or alkalinity of a solution on a scale of 0 to 14, with 7 being neutral. pH levels from 0 to 7 are considered acidic. Levels 7.1 to 14 are bases. The farther the pH reading is from 7, the stronger the acidic or base is. Reviewing the tables and graphs, when the acid or base was added to each of the homogenates, the individual reaction of each homogenate was different. A homogenate is a solution with solutes mixed completely throughout. Some homogenates were closer to that of water while some were closer to Alka-Seltzer according to pH level. When acid was added to the potato, the reaction was closer to Alka-Seltzer because they both have a change of 2 in pH, which is closer to the tap water change of 4. When base was added to the potato is was closer to that of Alka-Seltzer because it was closer to the pH change of 0 than tap water pH change of 6. When acid was added to the egg white it was closer to that of the tap water change of 4 than the Alka-Seltzer change of 2. When acid was added to yeast its change was closer to that of Alka-Seltzer because the yeast change of 0 is closer to the Alka-Seltzer change of 2 than tap water’s change. The reaction of yeast is closer to Alka-Seltzer when base was added to the Yeast solution. Celery’s reaction when acid was added was closer to Alka-Seltzer because celery’s change of 0 in pH is closer to Alka-Seltzer’s change than tap water’s change in pH.
